Abstract

From the launch of federal energy and research agencies in the 1970s to the enactment of legislation dedicating resources to clean energy research and the creation of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy , the US has had a rich history of market evolution. These developments have supported the US’s clean energy innovation and brought about cost-effective solutions to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation problems. Furthermore, since the 1990s, policy, regulatory, and legislative actions, both at the federal and state levels, have not only helped increase the share of renewable energy to approximately 21.5% of total utility-scale electricity generation by 2022, but their new knowledge and experiences have also positively influenced developments in other countries.
