KAPSARC holds workshop on China’s Energy Economy in Riyadh

KAPSARC held its second workshop on China's Energy Economy on November 12-13, 2014 in Riyadh. This workshop built on the ideas raised in the April workshop, and focused on China's Sustainable Fuel Strategies. The consequences of, and opportunities for, China's high coal use were explored through the lenses of formal economic models, society, policy and governance. In addition, the workshop explored China's oil use in the contexts of links with the GCC and North East Asian regional energy cooperation.Workshop participants included delegates from the Chinese Academy of Science; Chinese, Asian and American universities; NGOs and think tanks, including the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI) and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ). There were also representatives from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Deputy Minister for Electricity in the Kingdom.Focused on the challenges but also the opportunities facing China as it transitions to a more sustainable energy future, the workshop stimulated an active discussion and aired themes of importance to researchers, policymakers and society at large
